UNESCO Staff Member for Sexual Health and Human Rights

Since 2022, I have had the honor of serving on UNESCO’s Executive Committee on Sexual Health and Human Rights. This experience has been both enriching and essential, both personally and professionally. Thanks to my role on this committee, I have been able to actively contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to promote sexual health and human rights on a global scale.

A Shared Vision

The establishment of the UNESCO Chair in Sexual Health and Human Rights is based on an agreement signed on December 7, 2010, between UNESCO and the University of Paris 7. The purpose of this agreement is to develop training, research, and documentation programs in the field of sexual health and human rights. Within this framework, we have a responsibility to ensure that issues related to sexual health are integrated into discussions on human rights, education, and health policy.

My involvement with this chair is part of a shared goal: to promote knowledge and awareness about sexual health while defending individuals’ rights in this area. As a member of the executive committee, I participate in the development of innovative projects that aim to break down taboos and promote an inclusive approach that respects the rights of every individual.

Education and Awareness

Education is central to our mission. We are convinced that knowledge is a powerful tool for changing attitudes and improving public health. Within the chair, we develop educational programs aimed at informing the general public, healthcare professionals, and policymakers about the importance of sexual health. These initiatives include seminars, workshops, and scientific publications that address often-neglected topics, such as sexual rights, contraception, and the prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

Thanks to my experience in the fields of surgery and sexual health, I am able to bring both a practical and a medical perspective to these discussions. I strive to link clinical aspects to social and ethical issues, emphasizing the importance of a holistic approach that takes into account both physical health and human rights.

A multidisciplinary approach

The UNESCO Committee on Sexual Health and Human Rights takes a multidisciplinary approach and brings together experts from various fields, such as public health, law, education, and psychology. This diversity enriches our discussions and enables us to develop effective strategies tailored to different cultural and sociopolitical contexts.

As a member of the executive committee, I work closely with other experts to develop recommendations and best practices. Our work focuses on improving health policy, protecting the rights of individuals, and promoting sexual health within the framework of human rights.

Ethical Issues

Sexual health and human rights also raise complex ethical issues. Stigmatization and discrimination based on sexuality can have serious consequences for people’s physical and mental health. Within the chair, we have a responsibility to address these issues in a tactful manner and to propose solutions that promote inclusion and respect.

We also support initiatives aimed at engaging communities in promoting sexual health and human rights. By raising awareness and educating local communities, we can bring about sustainable and meaningful change.

A Long-Term Commitment

As a member of the UNESCO Committee on Sexual Health and Human Rights, I am convinced that our work contributes to a broader vision of a just society in which everyone’s rights are respected. Access to sexual health care, respect for individual rights, and education are essential pillars of our mission.

I am also deeply involved in research, as it is essential for supporting our actions and recommendations. By participating in studies and publishing scientific articles, I strive to share our findings and influence government policy in favor of better sexual health and greater protection of human rights.

Conclusion

My involvement with the UNESCO Chair in Sexual Health and Human Rights is a true passion. I am determined to contribute to a better understanding of the challenges in the field of sexual health and to amplify the voices of those who are often marginalized. Together with my colleagues, we are working toward a future in which sexual health is recognized as a fundamental right and in which everyone can benefit from appropriate and respectful care.

Through our work, we hope to inspire other health care professionals, educators, and policymakers to join our mission and advocate for sexual health and human rights for everyone.
