I am in Naples for the International Masterclass in Andrology and Reconstructive Surgery (iMARS). I am participating in the session “Update on Male Sexual Dysfunctions – Erectile Dysfunctions,” where I will give a presentation titled “New therapies for ED: results and follow-up.”
This is an ideal opportunity to take stock of the new treatment options for erectile dysfunction, as well as what really matters to patients in the long term.
Why revisit the topic of erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (ED) remains one of the most common reasons for seeking consultation in andrology. It has a direct impact on:
- quality of life
- the relationship between partners
- self-respect
- sometimes even cardiovascular health, since it can be a warning sign
Yet many men are still reluctant to talk about it, and some opt for solutions that lack medical supervision and may even be risky. That is precisely why conferences like iMARS are so important: they allow us to update our knowledge and anchor the treatment of ED in evidence-based medicine.
New Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction: Promises and Caution
In my presentation, I will discuss new therapeutic approaches to erectile dysfunction, as a complement to established treatments. The goal is not to promise miracles, but to answer a number of essential questions:
- What do the available clinical data actually show?
- For which patient profiles are these approaches relevant?
- What are the limitations, unknown factors, and gray areas?
I will highlight a few key points:
- the need to compare the results with standard treatments
- the importance of distinguishing between what is experimental and what is validated
- the need to provide patients with honest information about the expected benefits
My key message is simple: a “new therapy” is only worthwhile if it provides a real, lasting, and safe benefit for patients.
What Really Matters in the Long Run
In addition to my enthusiasm for this new development, I would like to highlight three aspects that I consider essential in the treatment of erectile dysfunction.
1. The sustainability of the results
A treatment is only effective if its effects:
- stand the test of time
- fit into the patient's daily life
- remain consistent with his overall health
I will present the available follow-up data for certain new treatment options and explain how these results should be interpreted in real-world settings, not just in published studies.
2. Safety and Side Effects
Each treatment must be evaluated based on:
- efficiency, of course
- but also tolerance, side effects, and potential risks
I am convinced that when it comes to erectile dysfunction, it is better to opt for a slightly less spectacular but well-documented solution than for a spectacular promise backed by little experience. Patient safety remains the absolute priority.
3. Realistic expectations and effective follow-up
One aspect that is often underestimated is managing expectations. In my presentation, I’ll revisit:
- how to clearly explain to the patient what he can reasonably expect from a treatment
- the importance of regular follow-up to adjust treatment as the condition progresses
- the role of ongoing dialogue about sexuality, the couple, and overall health
The treatment of erectile dysfunction is not limited to prescribing medication. It is a process that requires listening, adjustment, and time.
iMARS: Learning from Others and Sharing Experiences
What makes an event like iMARS so enriching is the diversity of the experts in attendance. For me, this masterclass is an opportunity to:
- share my experience in the field of andrology and men's sexual health
- hear the perspectives of colleagues who work in other healthcare systems
- discuss complex cases for which the guidelines do not provide all the answers
- Questioning our practices to better serve patients
I am grateful that I can learn from others while also doing my part to contribute to a topic that is close to my heart: how we can offer men modern, safe, and effective treatments for their erectile dysfunction.
