BAU Congress 2025: Where Artificial Intelligence and Electronic Health Records Converge in Urology

On Friday, December 5, 2025, I will give a presentation at the BAU (Belgian Association of Urology) conference in Brussels.

In Session 3: Innovation & Visualization, I will present a topic that is becoming increasingly important in our daily practice: “Integration of AI into the Electronic Health Record.”

For me, it’s not just about technology, but about a very specific question: How can artificial intelligence truly help urologists and their patients, rather than adding yet another layer of complexity?

Why I'm So Interested in AI in Patient Records

In my clinical practice, I see every day just how much administrative red tape, the increasing volume of data, and time pressures can negatively impact patient consultations. With AI integrated into the electronic health record, I believe we can:

  • make it easier to read and summarize complex information
  • Support for clinical decision-making through relevant alerts and suggestions
  • detect certain risk factors or clinical patterns earlier
  • make time for what matters most: the relationship with the patient

I don't believe in a form of medicine in which AI replaces the doctor. I believe in a form of medicine in which AI serves as a tool for clinical assessments, and not the other way around.

What I will present during the session

During my presentation, I will discuss, among other things:

  • Some specific examples of the use of AI in patient records in urology
  • the potential benefits for urologists
  • better organization and visualization of data
  • Help with risk stratification
  • support for long-term monitoring
  • the risks and limitations that should not be underestimated
  • overload caused by warnings
  • excessive reliance on the algorithm
  • issues related to data security and ethics

I would also like to emphasize a crucial point: a digital tool is only useful if it is well-tailored to real-world practice, with clinicians involved in the design process from the very beginning.

Working Together to Build a Future Where Technology and Healthcare Reinforce Each Other

For me, this conference is an opportunity to:

  • exchange ideas with colleagues about their experiences and expectations
  • discuss what is already working well, but also what is causing problems
  • work together to figure out the best way to integrate these tools into our practice without losing our identity as doctors

I am convinced that the future of urology will unfold at the intersection of three dimensions:

  • A reliable and compassionate clinic
  • intelligent and well-managed technology
  • close collaboration between doctors, engineers, institutions, and patients

I look forward to sharing, listening, and learning throughout the day, with one simple goal in mind: to ensure that digital tools and artificial intelligence truly improve the care we provide to our patients—and not the other way around.
